The Basecamp was about 15km from Kaupinen where the home base and kennels were located. Leaving home base, the trail started very steeply downhill, through forests and gradually weaving upwards through light tundra, over a frozen lake then through light woods, up into a sheltered clearing. The base camp, pretty basic in every way was to set the scene for the rest of the week. Cutting firewood and collecting water from a small, mostly frozen mountain creek was the main priority. Getting the main hut warm and brewing up the second! Candles provided the lighting, apart from a small 12v system running off a car battery charged by solar energy. This wasn't really used. The base camp did have some luxury though, a traditional sauna that was really a wooden shed with a stove in it. Getting the fire going well in the stove was essential if one was to have a good sauna at least 4 hours later. Hard work, but well worth it! My own personal nemesis was the outside toilet... I reckon you could smell this from Stockholme and I didn't like it! Basically a small wooden hut with a wooden seat featuring a hole leading to a pile of, well, you can guess. The only way I could bear to use it was to breath through a TCP soaked cloth. Odd really given my job, that with TCP, I Pee (Yes, yes, yes...) Other features of the base camp were a traditional Lapish tent, igloo and wild reindeer (who are farmed for their meat by the Lapish people).
