Ice Hotel Page [1] - [2] - [3] The Ice Hotel at Jukkäsjarvi is without doubt one of the most wierd "buildings" on Earth! Now celebrating 10 years of operation - although the first year didn't really count as it wasn't a 'hotel' then. The main "building" - constructed completely of ice now sleeps 130 people a night on beds made of ice, in rooms made from snow. It's the largest igloo on the planet and it melts every Spring. Yes, that's right, around May every year, the Ice Hotel becomes river and is rebuilt each October - even bigger than the year before. Although absolutely stunning and a true marvel, it's totally touristy with people flying into Kiruna from all corners of the world, usually to stay for one night, do a quick dog sled Coffee Tour (sat on a sled, not driving it, out to the Island for a coffee, then returning to the Ice Hotel. Nice I guess, if you like that kind of thing, but not really to my taste!). We stayed there on the last night after 5 nights in the wilderness and it seemed odd. I liked the base camp - toilet notwithstanding and fell in love with the Island on first sight. The Ice Hotel, marvel as it is, just cannot compete... Having said that, I really wouldn't have missed it and intend to take Charlotte (my partner) there next year for a night before doing the "Coast-to-coast" (coast of Sweden to the coast of Norway - 600km in ten days), but that's another story! Ice sculptures inside and out lend a creative and very modern feel to the place. The Ice Church also inside the Ice Hotel, had two weddings on the night we stayed but the most popular part of the Ice hotel - for us at least were the flush toilets and Ice Bar. Not having to worry about the dogs, or getting water, or building a fire - I got a little carried away with the camera here and apologise for the three pages of mostly ice related pictures!
